What is a crewed luxury yacht charter?

A luxury yacht charter is a fully customized holiday experience aboard a private yacht with a crew (the captain, chef, stewardess, housekeeper on some yachts, engineer, deckhands). You get the entire vessel just for your group, along with a professional crew who takes care of everything — from sailing and housekeeping to cooking and planning your days.

Yacht types to rent:

  • Motor yachts – fast, sleek, stylish;

  • Motor sailers – great volume + sails + great crew;

  • Gulets – traditional wooden vessels with charm (especially in Turkey & Croatia);

  • Catamarans – perfect for island-hopping, with great stability;

Where can you go on a luxury yacht charter?

There are dozens of stunning destinations where you can charter a yacht, each with its own charm. Some of the most loved ones include:

  • Croatia – Motor sailers, motor yachts, crystal waters & historic towns;

  • Greece – Cyclades, Ionian Islands, mythology, food, and amazing beaches;

  • Turkey – The original home of gulets, stunning bays & rich culture, trendy Bodrum «aka» new Mykonos;

  • Italy – Amalfi Coast, Sicily, Sardinia – all luxury, all beauty;

  • French Riviera – Chic, glamorous, ideal for short luxury breaks;

  • Caribbean & Bahamas – Winter yachting in paradise;

  • French Polynesia & Maldives, Indonesia & Thailand – Exotic escapes for the truly adventurous;

Each destination offers different yacht types and experiences.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht?

The cost depends on the type of yacht, size, destination, and season. But here’s a rough idea of weekly base rates (not including APA and VAT) for some destinations:

  • Gulets in Turkey/Croatia: from €15,000 to €70,000

  • Motor Sailers in Croatia: from €35,000 to €120,000

  • Luxury Motor Yachts: from €40,000 to €1,000,000+

  • Catamarans: from €12,000 to €80,000

Most yachts operate on an APA system (Advanced Provisioning Allowance), and VAT will apply depending on the cruising area. There are some exceptions when some meals are included in the rate or some portion of fuel for the every day cruising and the generators. But this is mainly an exception when it comes to global yacht charter practice.

Who are usually guests onboard charter yachts with the crew?

Most of my clients are families with children, multi-generational groups, couples who want a special holiday together, or groups of friends looking to celebrate something meaningful — like an anniversary, a milestone birthday, or simply spending quality time together.

The beautiful thing about yacht charters is that they suit a wide range of people: whether it’s your first time or you’ve chartered before, the experience can be tailored to your style.

Is there a specific age group who’s more into chartering a yacht for their holiday?

Yacht charters are truly flexible, which is why they attract such a broad age range. Many of my bookings are for guests in their 30s through 70s. Also families often travel with their younger children as well as infants, and I’ve also seen parents traveling with grown-up children in their 20s or 30s.

Yachts are designed to welcome everyone comfortably, from grandparents to grandchildren, with the nannies, bodyguards, assistants.

When and how to book?

  • Book early for the best selection, especially for summer high season months (June - August in the Mediterranean).

  • Most bookings are made 6–9 months in advance, but some popular yachts are booked over a year ahead.

  • Shoulder season (May, June, September, October) offers better availability and pricing.

Winter charters in the Caribbean or Indian Ocean? Book in summer the year before!

Charter experiences to choose from

Each yacht vacation can be tailored around what you love. Here are a few ideas:

  • Family-friendly holidays: comfortable, fun, and full of adventure;

  • Romantic & honeymoon escapes: private, luxurious, unforgettable;

  • Culinary voyages: local flavors, fine dining, private chefs;

  • History & culture: visit ancient ruins, charming villages, heritage ports;

  • Wellness cruises: relax, do yoga, eat clean, reconnect;

  • Party & celebration cruises: birthdays, anniversaries, special events;

  • Island-hopping fun: explore a new bay or beach every day;

What makes a crewed yacht charter so special – and how it is compared to other vacations?

A crewed yacht charter is not just a vacation — it’s a floating private villa, a boutique hotel on the sea, and an exclusive travel experience all in one. Unlike a cruise ship, where you share the space with hundreds or thousands of people, a crewed yacht is reserved entirely for your family or group of friends.

  • Private space – you enjoy every corner of the yacht with only your group.

  • Tailor-made itinerary – you decide where to go and when, with the help of your captain.

  • No rushing – flexible pace, no tight schedules, no waiting in lines.

  • Unpack once – your yacht moves, but your comfort stays with you.

  • New destination every day – without constant transfers or car rides.

  • Private bays and beaches – swim, snorkel, dine, and sunbathe far from the crowds.

Compared to renting a villa or staying in hotels, this is a truly mobile holiday. You wake up in a different postcard-perfect location each day without ever leaving the comfort of your yacht. It's an ideal choice for those who value privacy, ease, and immersive exploration, all with five-star comfort.

The Process

  • How does booking a yacht charter work?

  • What are the payment stages?

  • What information do I need from you to start?

  • What happens after you book?

  • How to reach the yacht at the start of a holiday?

  • Can you add a few days on land before or after your yacht holiday?

How does booking a yacht charter work?

We start with a short conversation about your preferences, dates, and budget. Then I present a tailored selection of yachts. Once you choose your yacht and all the terms are re-confirmed, we sign a MYBA or another type of charter agreement recognized in the industry and secure the booking with a deposit.

What are the payment stages?

Typically, 50% of the charter fee is due at the time of booking, and the remaining 50% (plus APA for expenses, taxes, and delivery fees if applicable) is due one month before departure.

What information do I need from you to start?

Basic details: number of guests, dates, preferred cruising area, type of yacht (motor yacht, sailing yacht, gulet), and your ideal budget. Some yacht owners or managers ask the nationalities of the group inquiring and what the purpose of a charter is - whether it’s a family charter or celebration, or parties-kind-of-mood.

What happens after you book a yacht?

After the contract is signed, the deposit is paid, I’ll send you a preference sheet to fill in with food, drinks, and activity requests. This is usually done some months before the charter starts or right away if a yacht is booked not way in advance. The crew uses this preference document to prepare the yacht and everything related to your holiday.

How to reach the yacht at the start of a holiday?

Usually, guests fly into the closest airport to the yacht’s departure port. From there, a private transfer can be arranged to take you directly to the yacht. I help coordinate this part so it’s seamless for you. On your last charter day, you can book a transfer back to the airport or a hotel if it’s your next travel plan after a yacht charter.

Can you add a few days on land before or after your yacht holiday?

Enjoying cultural sightseeing, shopping, or relaxing in a boutique hotel before or after the time at sea is a good idea. I’d be glad to share recommendations and help you plan this part of your trip too if that's possible.

Practical charter questions

  • What’s included in the charter fee?

  • How does the APA work?

  • What is the crew’s role onboard?

  • What kind of food & drinks can you expect on a yacht?

  • How much should you tip the crew?

What’s included in the charter fee?

The yacht and crew service are included. Food, drinks, fuel, harbor fees, and extras are usually covered by an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), which is managed by the captain. APA is the deposit the guests pay in advance with the charter fee and VAT.

How does the APA work?

APA is usually 30–40% of the charter fee, paid in advance. It covers fuel, provisions, and local charges, port & marina fees, transfers, etc. The captain provides full accounts during and at the end of the trip, and any unused funds are refunded. Otherwise if the expenses are higher than the APA paid before, the guests have to cover the difference.

What is the crew’s role onboard?

Your crew takes care of everything: navigation, cooking, service, housekeeping, and water sports.

What kind of food & drinks can you expect on a yacht?

Completely tailored to your preferences. Before the trip, you’ll fill in a preference sheet with favorite meals, dietary needs, and drink choices. Your chef will then prepare a custom menu for you.

How much should you tip the crew?

Tipping is customary in yachting. If you liked the service & your experience, then 10–15% of the base charter fee, depending on the destination and level of service, is something to consider as a tip.

What should you pack for a yacht charter?

Light clothes, swimwear, soft-soled shoes, hats, sun protection, and casual evening outfits, your own medicine if needed, ear plugs for those who have sensitive sleep, a hoodie or something warm to wear in the evening out of the hottest summer months. It can also get chilly when you sail, so a light jacket / hoodie may be a good idea. If you plan to go out to a beach club, a restaurants, or to attend some summer parties, events - don't hesitate to bring your favourite outfits for this.

Questions about yacht charter broker

  • Why work with a yacht charter broker?

  • Who is behind this blog?

  • Can you book a yacht directly with me?

  • How to get in touch with me?

  • Can I help you plan the itinerary too?

  • Do I only cover the Mediterranean?

  • What inspired me to do this work?

Why work with a yacht charter broker?

In the world of private yacht charters, working with a charter broker is the industry standard. Yachts are almost never booked directly with the owners. I'm speaking about the general practice.

A professional yacht charter broker (like myself) helps you:

  • Choose the right yacht based on your needs, budget, and preferences;

  • Explain how yacht charters work, including pricing structures (APA, VAT, crew tips);

  • Offer trusted insights from real yacht visits and firsthand experience;

  • Recommend legally compliant, commercially registered yachts with professional crew;

  • Handle paperwork, contracts, preferences, and logistics;

  • Provide honest advice, clear communication, and ongoing support;

Best of all, you don’t pay anything extra for a broker’s services — our fee is covered by the yacht owner. So you get professional expertise, security, and peace of mind — at no added cost.

Who is behind this blog?

This blog is created and written by me (Kateryna Kyslyak) — a professional yacht charter broker working with an international MYBA-member yacht company Contact Yachts. I live between Istanbul and the Mediterranean and spend my time visiting yachts, attending charter shows in destinations like the South of France, Croatia, and Greece, as well as Turkey of course, and exploring coastal towns myself. I write here to share insider knowledge and inspiration for your next journey at sea. I’m not just here to sell you a yacht — I’m here to help you plan an unforgettable journey. Whether you’re new to chartering or looking for something extra special — I’m here to guide you every step of the way.

Let’s talk: kateryna@contactyachts.com

Can you book a yacht directly with me?

Yes. While this blog is personal, I work as a professional yacht charter broker with access to an international fleet of luxury crewed yachts. If you discover a yacht, an itinerary, or a destination on my blog that inspires you, you can reach out to me, and I will guide you through the booking process step by step.

How to get in touch with me?

You can use the contact form in this blog, email me directly, or connect via Instagram. I personally respond to every inquiry and will be happy to suggest yachts tailored to your travel style, group size, and budget. All the contact details are here or at the bottom of this page.

Can I help you plan the itinerary too?

Absolutely. One of the joys of chartering with a broker is that I can suggest sample itineraries, hidden bays, restaurants, cultural highlights, and even coordinate transfers and pre/post-yacht hotel stays. You’ll have a tailor-made experience, not just a boat rental.

Do I only cover the Mediterranean?

The Mediterranean is my specialty, but I also collaborate with trusted partners worldwide — from the Caribbean to the Maldives. Also my colleagues from Contact Yachts work worldwide and will help us with the more remote destinations. If you dream of a yacht charter somewhere else, I can make it happen.

What inspired me to do this work?

I believe travel by sea is one of the most special experiences in the world. My journey started with a passion for the Mediterranean and turned into a career helping people create their dream vacations on yachts. More about my story and expertise - here
